Artist's Description

After spotting this fawn hidden on our farmette, I was curious about how and why a doe hides her babies. During the first couple weeks of life, a fawn spends most of its time hidden and alone. The Doe will hide the fawn in the safety of tall grass or brush and then move away to avoid drawing predators to her baby. The fawn has very little scent and is camoflaged in the brush. The Doe will return briefly to nurse but will leave the fawn hidden for twelve or so hours before moving her baby to a new hiding place. After two or three weeks, the baby is strong enough to move around with the Doe and run from predators.

We kept watch over the baby but kept a distance so we didn't scare him off.
